Attending to faces

in conversation

Consciously read expressions during conversation.

Source Study scope The fusiform face area responds selectively to faces (Kanwisher).
Kanwisher, McDermott and Chun (1997) established the fusiform face area's strong response to faces. Whether that response is specific to faces or reflects expertise with any finely discriminated category has been studied since Gauthier's work of the late 1990s, and both accounts are current in the literature.

Face-time over screens

daily

Prioritize seeing real faces over text threads.

Source Study scope Real-face interaction engages face-selective processing that text does not.
Face-selective processing is engaged by seeing a face and not by reading text, which follows from the region's response properties. The effect of time spent in text-based exchange on that processing has not been measured; the nearest work concerns social connection.
